According to a survey by Zurich Insurance, the average person carries £851 of gadgets (£1034 for Londoners) with them every day. In 2009 the police noted a 40% rise in muggings in some area of the UK which they attribute to the rise in popularity of gadgets, with half of all street crime involving mobile phones.

Basic home insurance policies rarely cover many gadgets such as sat navs or iPods and even those that will charge a high excess and subsequent rise in premiums that almost negates the worth of making a claim. Nowadays it’s possible to get a separate insurance policy for your gadgets to avoid this.
